College Profile: Wake Forest University

I always enjoy visiting the campus of Wake Forest University. It is a private research university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is full of vibrant, intelligent students who enjoy large amounts of community engagement. Founded in 1834, it has a rich history and unique traditions that make it a truly special place to pursue higher education. I am always taken with the warmth and friendliness of the campus and the vast number of opportunities.

Fun Facts About Wake Forest

  •  The university's nickname, the "Demon Deacons," originated from a spirited mock cheer during a basketball game in the 1920s. The name stuck, and the "Demon Deacon" mascot is now an iconic symbol of Wake Forest.

  •  Wake Forest has its own NPR-affiliate radio station, WFDD, which has been broadcasting since 1946 and reaches 32 counties in North Carolina and Virginia.

  •  Every student is required to take at least one course in the arts before graduating, fostering a vibrant arts community on campus.

  •  The university's art collections consist of over 1,600 works displayed across 35 on-campus and off-campus locations. Students even get to make an art-buying trip to New York City every four years to add to the collections.

A Storied History

Wake Forest was founded in 1834 in Wake Forest, North Carolina, by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. It moved to its current location in Winston-Salem in 1956, establishing the beautiful Reynolda Campus. The university has a long tradition of academic excellence and has produced numerous notable alumni, including authors, politicians, and business leaders.

Cherished Traditions

  •  The "Hit the Bricks" tradition involves students gathering on the campus bricks to celebrate major philanthropic events, athletic victories or other significant events.

  •  The "Rolling the Quad" tradition involves students rolling down the main quad after their last class before graduation or major athletic victories.

  •  The "Lovefeast" is a candlelight service held each December, celebrating the university's Christian heritage and the spirit of community.

Student Statistics

  •  Wake Forest has an undergraduate enrollment of around 5,200 students from all 50 states and over 50 countries.

  •  The student-faculty ratio is 11:1, ensuring personalized attention and close collaboration with professors.

  •  Over 250 student clubs and organizations cater to diverse interests, including fraternities, sororities, intramural sports, a student newspaper, and a radio station.
