College Profile: UNC Wilmington

I recently had the chance to tour UNC Wilmington and I was blown away by the beautiful campus, thriving student life, and lovely location near the ocean. There are amazing programs available and the students who go there seem thrilled with their experiences.

Fun Facts about UNCW:

  1. Coastal Beauty: UNCW's campus sits on 661 acres of land near the coast, with gorgeous landscaping and Georgian-style architecture. Nearby, students can find breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. It’s not uncommon to spot dolphins playing in the waves just off the shore!

  2. Eco-Friendly Campus: UNCW is committed to sustainability, boasting LEED-certified buildings, recycling initiatives, and a bike-friendly campus.

  3. Film Studies: Did you know UNCW offers a nationally recognized film studies program? Students have the opportunity to study film theory, production, and criticism while collaborating on creative projects. Many famous shows and movies have been filmed in the area!

  4. Seahawk Pride: UNCW’s mascot, Sammy the Seahawk, represents the university’s spirit and pride. You can show your Seahawk spirit at sporting events and campus celebrations.

History of UNCW:

Established in 1947 as Wilmington College, UNCW has grown from a small junior college to a thriving comprehensive university. In 1969, it became part of the University of North Carolina system and adopted its current name. Throughout its history, UNCW has remained dedicated to providing a high-quality education while fostering a sense of community and inclusion.

Traditions at UNCW:

  1. Midnight Madness: Each year, UNCW kicks off basketball season with Midnight Madness, a lively event featuring player introductions, dunk contests, and performances by the Seahawk Spirit Squad.

  2. Beach Blast: UNCW’s Beach Blast is a beloved tradition where students gather for a day of sun, sand, and fun at nearby Wrightsville Beach. It’s the perfect way to unwind before finals!

  3. Port City Java: The campus is filled with dining choices but Port City Java is a popular coffee shop on campus where students gather to study, socialize, and enjoy delicious coffee and pastries.

Student Statistics at UNCW:

  • Enrollment: UNCW enrolls over 17,000 students each year, including undergraduates, graduates, and online learners.

  • Student-Faculty Ratio: With a student-faculty ratio of 18:1, UNCW offers small class sizes and personalized attention from professors.

  • Diversity: UNCW celebrates diversity, with students representing all 100 counties in North Carolina, as well as all 50 states and over 70 countries.

I found this school to be a wonderful size (not too big and not too small), with a real sense of community and spirit. I urge you to visit in person if you are able to, and check out their website at https://uncw.edu.
