College Profile: U.S. Naval Academy

In addition to being an amazing training ground for our future military leaders, the U.S. Naval Academy is a premier academic institution. The grounds are stunning and the location right in the middle of historic Annapolis cannot be beat. Many of our nation’s leaders, astronauts, and scientists started their careers at the Academy. If a military program is what you are leaning toward, the USNA is a wonderful option.

Fun Facts About the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA)

  • Founded: October 10, 1845. USNA is located in Annapolis, Maryland, and provides four years of education, shaping future officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

  • Mascot: The USNA’s mascot is Bill the Goat.

  • Colors: The academy’s official colors are navy blue and gold, symbolizing the Navy and the academy’s traditions.

  • Bancroft Hall on campus is the largest single dormitory in the world!

A Brief History

The USNA was established as a response to the need for formal naval education, replacing the earlier apprenticeship system. The institution quickly rose in prominence, training midshipmen in science, navigation, and warfare. During the Civil War, it relocated temporarily to Newport, Rhode Island, but returned to Annapolis soon after. Today, USNA is a premier service academy, preparing future leaders for challenges at sea and beyond.

Traditions at the U.S. Naval Academy

  1. Plebe Summer: A seven-week initiation program for freshmen (known as plebes) designed to teach discipline and teamwork.

  2. Herndon Climb: Each year, plebes must scale the Herndon Monument to mark their transition into upperclassmen. It’s covered in grease for added challenge!

  3. Army-Navy Football Game: This annual game is a fiercely competitive and celebrated tradition between the USNA and the U.S. Military Academy (West Point).

  4. Commissioning Week: A time of celebration for graduating seniors, highlighted by the Blue Angels’ air show and the formal commissioning ceremony.

Student Statistics

  • Acceptance Rate: Highly selective, with about a 9% acceptance rate.

  • Enrollment: Approximately 4,500 midshipmen at any given time.

  • Gender Breakdown: Around 28% of the student body is female.

  • Post-Graduation: Every graduate earns a commission as an officer in either the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps, with a five-year active duty service commitment.

The midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy are intelligent, spirited, and engaged. From rigorous academics to cherished traditions, USNA offers an experience that is very different from a typical four years in college.
