While the big state schools in the south get a lot of attention, there are many students who appreciate a smaller, more intimate college experience. In Florida, there are great options in all sizes. Stetson University, located in DeLand, Florida, is a private institution with a rich history, vibrant traditions, and a diverse student body. Its location allows students easy access to the beach and to nearby Orlando. On a side note, I attended Stetson my Freshman year and can attest to the beautiful campus.

Fun Facts:

  • Stetson University has been recognized as a "Green College" by The Princeton Review for its strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

  • Diverse Academic Offerings: The university comprises four colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music, the School of Business Administration, and the College of Law, providing a wide range of programs for students.

Historical Highlights:

  • Founded in 1883 as DeLand Academy by Henry Addison DeLand, the institution was renamed in 1889 to honor John B. Stetson, a prominent hat manufacturer and benefactor.

  • Stetson holds the distinction of being Florida's first private university, setting a precedent for higher education in the state.

Traditions:

  • Green, White, and Orange: The university's official colors are green and white, representing growth and purity. Orange is also used to symbolize Florida's citrus industry.

  • Hatter Mascot: Embracing its namesake's legacy, the university's mascot is "John B.," a nod to the iconic hatter, fostering school spirit and unity.

Student Statistics:

  • Enrollment: Stetson University has approximately 3,700 students, with 2,350 undergraduates and the rest graduate and law students.

  • Student-to-Faculty Ratio: The university maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, allowing for personalized attention and a supportive learning environment.

  • Diverse Representation: Students hail from various states and countries, contributing to a rich tapestry of cultures and perspectives on campus.

If you are interested in a smaller school in a warm climate, Stetson University offers a blend of historical significance, enduring traditions, and a commitment to academic excellence, making it a compelling choice for prospective students seeking a well-rounded and enriching educational experience in Florida. I encourage you to check out the website at https://www.stetson.edu/ or take a campus tour in person.
