College Profile - Sewanee: The University of the South

I’m particularly excited to profile Sewanee, as my sister went to this wonderful school. Year after year, the campus is ranked as one of the most beautiful in the country. It is an oasis on the top of a hill in Tennessee and particularly enjoyable for outdoor enthusiasts. The academics are excellent, and the school works hard to make sure that all students have internship, research, and study abroad opportunities during their time as a student.

Fun Facts:

  • Scenic Beauty: Nestled atop the Cumberland Plateau, Sewanee boasts breathtaking natural beauty. With 13,000 acres of forests, bluffs, and trails, it's an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. The “Domain” has 65 miles of trails.

  • Historical Roots: Established in 1857, Sewanee has a rich history steeped in academic excellence.

  • Distinctive Architecture: The campus is adorned with stunning Gothic-style buildings.

  • Sewanee Angel: Legend has it that a mysterious angel statue watches over the campus, bringing good luck to students during exams. When you leave campus, students tap the roof of the car and your “angel” travels with you, and when you return, you tap the roof again so your angel can rest and knows you are safe on campus.

  • Community Engagement: Sewanee is deeply committed to service and community involvement, offering numerous opportunities for students to make a positive impact.

School Traditions:

  • The Order of the Gown: Dating back to 1873, this tradition involves wearing academic gowns to formal events, symbolizing the unity and pride of Sewanee students. Students often pass their gowns down to the next generation of students to create a legacy.

  • Honor Code: Sewanee students adhere to a strict honor code, fostering a culture of integrity and trust within the community.

  • Passing Hello: Though this one is getting more lax, students and faculty are encouraged to say hello to everyone they pass to foster connection and community.

  • Hiking the Perimeter Trail: Before students graduate, it is a tradition to hike the entirety of the Perimeter Trail (approximately a 20-mile loop).

  • Lessons and Carols: Service during the holiday season weaving together biblical readings with holiday music. It is a huge event on campus, and televised.
