College Profile: Hood College

On a recent trip to Frederick, MD, I had the opportunity to tour Hood College and I found the campus to be beautiful and welcoming, and the students engaged and energized. This is a terrific small liberal arts school in a cute town with plenty of history and culture.

History:

  • Founded in 1893, Hood College began as a women's college with the mission to advance education for women in literature, science, and art.

  • The first semester commenced with 83 students and a faculty of eight, and by 1898, the institution awarded its first baccalaureate degrees to 14 women. It is now a co-ed campus.

Traditions:

  • Hood College is steeped in traditions that foster a close-knit community and a sense of belonging among students. One such tradition is the "Hood Hello," a custom where individuals greet those they pass on campus, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the outset.

Student Body:

  • Hood College's total enrollment stands around 2,100 students, comprised of approximately 1,200 undergraduates and 900 graduate students.

  • Students hail from 25 states, the District of Columbia, and 12 countries, reflecting a broad geographic diversity.

  • Notably, 41.5% of undergraduate students and 39.2% of graduate students are either members of underrepresented populations or come from countries outside the U.S., contributing to a rich cultural tapestry on campus.

Fun Facts:

  • Haunted History: Hood College has its share of folklore and legends, with tales of haunted buildings and ghostly apparitions that intrigue students and visitors alike.

  • Community Engagement: The college emphasizes service and civic engagement, encouraging students to participate in community service projects and develop leadership skills that extend beyond the classroom.

If you are interested in a small, tight-knit community for your college experience, Hood College might be a good fit. Tour in person or visit the website at https://www.hood.edu.
