I have visited Duke University many times and always leave inspired by the vibrant community, school spirit, and academic excellence. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is renowned for its rigorous academics, exciting campus life, and rich traditions. Students are proud to be a Blue Devil.
History:
Duke's origins date back to 1838 with the establishment of Union Institute in Randolph County, North Carolina, by local Methodist and Quaker communities. The institution evolved into Trinity College and relocated to Durham in 1892. In 1924, James Buchanan Duke transformed Trinity College into Duke University as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. This transformation was fueled by the Duke family's philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, leading to significant physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became East Campus, rebuilt in Georgian architecture, while the Gothic-style West Campus, dominated by the iconic 210-foot Duke Chapel tower, opened in 1930.
Traditions:
Basketball Rivalry: Duke's men's basketball team is celebrated for its success, including five national championships. The fierce rivalry with the University of North Carolina (UNC), located just eight miles away, is a highlight of the athletic calendar, with matchups that are eagerly anticipated and passionately attended.

"Everytime We Touch" Tradition: Whenever the song "Everytime We Touch" by Cascada plays, students unite in spontaneous singing, clapping, and dancing. Originating with the basketball team, this tradition has permeated the broader student body, symbolizing unity and school spirit.
