College Profile: Dartmouth College

Dartmouth is an easy school for me to profile, as I had my first date with my husband at a coffee shop located right on the main green of campus while I was a law student in Vermont. Twenty-five years later, our son entered Dartmouth as a freshman. It is indeed a wonderful school hardly requiring any introduction. Nestled in the picturesque town of Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College is more than just an Ivy League institution; it's a community that fosters academic excellence, vibrant student life, and a unique sense of tradition. I have visited many times and am always struck by the fascinating students with varied interests, the passion of the professors, and the vibrancy of the campus.

I would recommend starting online if you cannot visit in person right away. The official Dartmouth College website (https://home.dartmouth.edu) serves as your gateway to a treasure trove of information. From admissions details and academic programs to campus events and news, the website provides a comprehensive overview of what Dartmouth has to offer.

Dartmouth's commitment to academic excellence is evident in its diverse range of programs. Whether you're passionate about the liberal arts, sciences, engineering, or business, Dartmouth offers a world-class education with a faculty dedicated to mentorship and collaboration. The "Academics" section on the website provides insights into the various disciplines and majors available, giving you a glimpse into the depth and breadth of Dartmouth's academic offerings.

To truly understand Dartmouth, you can hear from the students themselves. Visit the "Student Life" section on the website, where you can find blogs, testimonials, and videos created by current Dartmouth students. Gain valuable insights into their daily lives, extracurricular activities, and the sense of community that makes Dartmouth a second home for many.

Fun Facts About Dartmouth:

The Dartmouth Outdoors Club (DOC):

Right from the beginning, students have the chance to embrace the spirit of adventure with Dartmouth's Outdoors Club, one of the oldest and largest collegiate outing clubs in the country. Before freshmen arrive to start the fall term, they can choose from a massive list of options for “First Year Trips” that allow them to meet other students, push themselves out of their comfort zone, and develop Dartmouth spirit in the outdoors. From hiking and skiing to kayaking and rock climbing, the DOC offers endless opportunities for students to explore the breathtaking landscapes surrounding the campus all year long.

The Dartmouth Skiway:

The school has its own ski mountain! Student season passes are very inexpensive and shuttles take students back and forth from campus for the 20-minute ride all through winter.

The Dartmouth Plan (D-Plan):

Dartmouth's unique academic calendar, known as the Dartmouth Plan, encourages a close-knit learning environment and is based on a quarter system. Each year, students will be “On” for three quarters and “Off” for one. During “Off” quarters, they are encouraged and assisted with overseas programs, internship opportunities, and research potential. With a focus on small class sizes and intimate discussions, the Dartmouth Plan fosters meaningful connections between students and faculty.

Campus Details:

Historic Architecture and Modern Facilities:

Dartmouth's campus seamlessly blends historic charm (it was established in 1769) with modern amenities. From the iconic Baker-Berry Library to state-of-the-art research facilities, you'll find a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Check out the "Campus Life" section on the website to discover the unique spaces that contribute to Dartmouth's dynamic atmosphere. I am partial to the Adirondak chairs and fire pits in front of the Collis Student Center, overlooking the Green.

The Dartmouth Green:

At the heart of campus lies the Dartmouth Green, a sprawling lawn surrounded by classic buildings. It serves as a central gathering place for students, hosting events, picnics, and impromptu Frisbee games and Spike Ball. The sense of community is palpable on the Green, making it a cherished space for everyone.

What Makes Dartmouth Special:

Strong Alumni Network:

Dartmouth's extensive alumni network is a testament to the lasting impact of a Dartmouth education. Joining the Dartmouth family means gaining access to a supportive network of successful individuals who are eager to help fellow Dartmouth graduates thrive in their respective fields.

Size:

Dartmouth is the smallest of the Ivy League schools. With under 5,000 undergraduate students, it is easy to establish bonds with other students and faculty, while still having everything necessary to excel at the highest level.

If you are interested in considering Dartmouth, I highly suggest an in-person tour to get a sense of this gem of a school located by a river in the mountains! If you enjoy the outdoors, this could be the right school for you!
