College Profile: Colorado College

I have visited many schools in Colorado, and always marvel at how majestic and inspiring the mountainous surroundings are for creating the optimal studying experience. Nestled at the foot of the stunning Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado College (CC) offers a unique educational experience that intertwines rich history, cherished traditions, and a dynamic student community. If you are interested in a smaller school with a unique academic process, then CC might a great choice to consider.

History:

  • Founding Vision: Established in 1874, Colorado College was founded by Thomas Nelson Haskell with the intention of creating a coeducational liberal arts institution. The college held its first classes on May 6, 1874, with an inaugural cohort of 25 students—13 men and 12 women—underscoring its commitment to inclusivity from the very beginning.

  • Architectural Heritage: The first building on campus, Cutler Hall, was completed in 1880 and remains a central piece of CC's architectural heritage.

  • Musical Legacy: In 1893, while teaching at Colorado College, Katharine Lee Bates penned the iconic song "America the Beautiful," drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscapes.

Traditions:

  • Pizza Problems: A longstanding tradition within the Mathematics Department, "Pizza Problems" are challenges posted once a block. Students tackle these math or computer science problems individually or in groups, with the reward of a free pizza awaiting the solver.

  • Athletic Beginnings: Baseball was the first sport introduced at CC, with football following in 1882. The college's first intercollegiate football game was against the Sigafus Hose Company, marking the beginning of its athletic traditions.

Student Demographics and Campus Life:

  • Diverse Community: As of recent data, Colorado College enrolls approximately 2,173 students. The gender distribution is as follows: 52.72% identify as female, 44.76% as male, 2.29% as non-binary, and less than 1% as transgender or genderless.

  • Engaged Student Body: CC boasts a vibrant campus life with over 100 clubs and student organizations. From intramural sports like broomball and ultimate frisbee to various interest-based groups, there's something for everyone.

  • Residential Experience: The college emphasizes a residential experience, requiring students to live on campus until their junior year. Housing options range from traditional residence halls to small houses and apartments, fostering a close-knit community atmosphere.

Fun Facts:

  • Block Plan: CC operates on a unique Block Plan, where students immerse themselves in a single subject for three and a half weeks. This intensive approach allows for deep exploration and experiential learning opportunities.

  • Athletic Excellence: While most of CC's varsity sports teams compete in NCAA Division III, the men's hockey and women's soccer teams compete at the Division I level, showcasing the college's athletic prowess.

Colorado College seamlessly blends a rich historical legacy with modern educational practices, offering students a different and enriching experience. The student body forms a tight community. I have visited as a college student, and now as an adult, and I loved the combination of stellar academics with nature-loving fun. I encourage you to visit in person, and check out the website at: https://www.coloradocollege.edu/.
